Fitzwilliam Darcy delayed coming down for breakfast with the hopes Georgiana and Richard would no longer be around. Eating supper from a tray in his room had allowed him to avoid a discussion last evening, but he could not continue to ignore them. He had failed miserably to please her, and he disliked having to admit all his elaborate plans had been for naught.

“Good morning. We have been waiting patiently to hear how things went.”

“I told Georgie I was certain you were upstairs pouting when we were told you did not want to eat with us last evening.”

“I do not pout. Elizabeth has asked me to help her buy some ponies. I am taking her and Edward to Tattersall’s this afternoon. It is also her wish to become better acquainted with you, Georgiana. I told her about Wickham and the near elopement and she felt much compassion for you.”

“That sounds like you made some progress. Please tell me you told her I hope we are able to be friends. Even if I have to keep it secret, I love the idea I have a sister.”

“She scolded me for wanting to pay for the ponies.”

“Good for her. Do you think after what you did, she should immediately obey you? At least she did not punish you.”

Darcy blushed. “Richard, I thought you were on my side.”

“I am. I want you to win her back. You arrogantly ignored her for six years. It is time to listen to what she wants.”

“I agree, Will. You had an air of uncaring at Ramsgate. You were in command when dealing with George, but you barely recognized my pain and humiliation. I was wrong to fall for his flattery, but you never once asked me why. Elizabeth was betrayed by you, she did nothing wrong, and yet you think you can order her about as you did me.”

“Take them to Tattersall’s. Make certain she believes you are helping her, not deciding for her. Teach your son about horses and ponies. Let him see you are an expert without being arrogant.”
